(1) “Richard III” by William Shakespeare and Kelly Griffiths© A tale of a man “Unfit for any place but hell”...It can only be Richard III! Let us transport you back to England in the 1400’s where a jealous, deformed and bitter man desperately clutches at the opportunity to become King and threatens to kill anyone who stands in his path. King Edward IV, Richard’s Brother, is sick and the only promise of power Richard is given is to become Lord Protector of the realm, ensuring the safety of the rightful heir to the throne, Edward V. This is simply not good enough for our Ricky, so he sets out to gain the confidence of defenceless citizens, the shady Duke of Buckingham and a very gullible Lady Ann in order to murder his way to the crown. And you are going to help. Following ten seasons of successfully touring Shakespearean adaptions and back by popular demand, this highly entertaining, witty and educational play will definitely engage your students in the Bard’s work. The mix of modern and Shakespearean language helps motivate the student’s understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare, whilst still being faithful to the spirit of the original text. Performed by our highly skilled team of actors, who facilitate the audience in to getting involved in the show with choric speaking, creating soundscapes and even playing some of the Shakespearean characters; a truly magical theatre experience is guaranteed. (2) “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley and Kelly Griffiths© Whilst studying natural philosophy and chemistry at the university of Ingolstadt, the gifted scientist, Victor Frankenstein, becomes consumed by the desire to discover the secret of life and spends months feverishly fashioning a creature out of old body parts. One climactic night, in the secrecy of his apartment, he brings his creation to life but is so horrified by the monstrosity, he flees from it. Upon returning, the monster has disappeared and Victor soon finds out it has accidentally killed his brother. The monster, alone, shunned and frightened appeals to Victor for forgiveness and begs he creates a partner for him to feel more wanted in this isolated world he has forced him into. Victor complies, but whilst creating the monster’s bride, realizes how irresponsible it would be to bring two terrifying beings into the world and so kills her. In a fit of rage, the monster seeks revenge through murder and terror, including the slaughter of Victor’s new bride. Victor, in turn, swears to a life of tracking down the monster to terminate him and undo his own vile work. However, during a chase across icy plains in pursuit of the Monster, the water beneath Victor swells, the ice breaks and Victor dies of exhaustion in the harsh Arctic elements.
Since 2016, Kelly has been writing adaptations of Shakespeare and other classics for The Phoenix Theatre and always promises to inject classic British humour, as well as modern references to appeal to audiences’ young and old. Her anarchic style provides a memorable and engaging performance for students. Her new adaptation of “Frankenstein” is no different.
